Employee Welfare At Work: Being Safe And Smarter

by JJMC on January 24, 2011

Worldwide, there are divergence in workplace safety outcomes. In the more advanced economies, the issue is seen as one of a of shared responsibility, but one where the employer needs to set the ground work in place.

For the employer, this will proceed with a workplace audit to comprehend circumstances that may cause localized fatigue, undue strain, pain or discomfort, frequent overhead or heavy lifts, repetitive and forceful exertions, awkward work positions, or any direct impacts from constant use of vibrating equipment, and any exposures to chemicals and emissions

This means identifying hazards and establishing the risks throughout the whole workplace.

From the initial survey work, will follow an action list, which will include measures such as engineering improvements, implementation of safer work processes, use of more environmentally and worker friendly chemicals, and safer work systems. These tasks need to be undertaken by the employer. Additionally, if this process has been done thoroughly, it will have ensured that all the relevant workplace safety signs are there.

Not only should the signs be in place, but that employees completely understand the subject matter of the safety signs in use.

Safety signs are put on the wall in response to an identified hazard. They, that is, employers and employees, have a joint responsibility with respect to safety and safety signs; they have a joint obligation. Safety signs are not a substitute for other means of hazard diminution; they are to be used to gain additional leverage to all the hazard reduction steps identified in the initial assessment.

Championing a safety culture in the workplace has multiple benefits for all those who work there. The investment is miniscule in comparison to the improved higher team morale, employee welfare and lower insurance premiums. It is just good business management.

Responsible business management dictates paying attention to all matters related to OH&S.
